SARANAC LAKE, NY—The Adirondack Abortion Access Committee Voters for Change is proud to present a second screening of the award-winning feature film “Happening” at BluSeed Studios, located at 24 Cedar Street in Saranac Lake, on November 19 at 7 p.m. -Best-selling French film that debuted in the United States last spring and won the Golden Lion for Best Picture at the prestigious Venice Film Festival last year. It is based on a true story and is set in the early 1960s, when abortion and contraception were illegal in France and anyone who had an abortion (or helped someone else to have an abortion) risked prison.
The screenplay is based on the book Event by Annie Ernaux who has just received the Nobel Prize for Literature 2022 for all of her work. Anne’s story is very relevant now that the Supreme Court has overturned its own groundbreaking Roe v. Wade – a decision made nearly 50 years ago that guaranteed a constitutional right to abortion. A round table will immediately follow the screening. The panel will consist of Dr. Eve Burns, Dr. James Pate, Katie Ramus of Planned Parenthood of the North Country, NY, and Ms. Shir Filler, local educator. Dr. Dorothy Federman will serve as moderator.
In French with English subtitles, “Happening”, which is unrated and contains adult content, is intended for mature audiences only. Masks will be optional. The requested donations of $10 will be used to help provide access to abortion in restrictive states.
