Zack Snyder Once Felt His Movie ‘Watchmen’ Punished His Audience

As with the graphic novel, Snyder wanted watchmen cover many topics. He used the adaptation to comment on earlier superhero movies like the Joel Schumacher Batman movies for example. One of the many criticisms Schumacher’s Batman received was the decision to put nipples on Batman’s costume. Snyder decided to poke fun at this costume choice by putting nipples on the costume worn by watchmen superhero Ozymandias.

“The nipples didn’t show up on this costume because we thought it was cool. It’s because we mean yeah…damn Joel Schumacher has done a bunch of superhero movies. That’s crazy” , said Snyder Collider.

Snyder also felt that there were parts of the movie that had movie qualities like Dr Strangelove and Taxi driver. These and other elements have helped to make watchmen stand out from being a typical superhero movie.

“It’s not just superhero movies, you know. It kind of had to, because Alan did it – it wasn’t just, it was comic book movies or comic book literature, but it was all literature as well. You know, he’s very, he’s a smart guy. So we tried, we definitely tried to reference as many superhero cliches, movie cliches as we could without it becoming self-conscious. It’s a fine line,” he said.

at Snyder watchmen received moderately positive reviews from critics. It is currently at 65% on rotten tomatoesindicating that a slight majority of reviewers enjoyed watchmen. In response to some of watchmen’s negative reviews, the Justice League the director wondered if the film’s detractors even read the source material.

“What I find fascinating about how Watchmen has been received is that 10% or less of critics seemed to have actually read the graphic novel,” Snyder said. The Guardian. “I feel like a lot of them just went to Wikipedia. Because it’s really not a movie, in the traditional sense. And if you try to analyze it in those terms – not in terms of relationship to pop culture – then you’re missing the point.

Snyder also felt that the film might have put off audiences and critics who expected a traditional superhero. He compared it to The black Knighthis own situation.

“What’s popular about The black Knight is that it’s a superhero movie at its core. When Batman puts on his suit, it’s badass: ‘Yeah Batman, kick some ass,’” he continued. “watchmen is a totally different experience: it punishes the audience.

Snyder set out to attract mainstream superhero fans to watchmen before subverting their expectations.

“At the same time, I really wanted it to be marketed that way. I wanted people to think it’s going to be a standard superhero movie, and then they’re going to be faced with all these ideas. Because that’s what the graphic novel made me when I read it,” he said.

Zack Snyder Once Shared That The Original ‘Watchmen’ Script Was A More Traditional PG-13 Superhero Movie

The original script Snyder received for watchmen was a significant departure from the graphic novel which took a more franchise-friendly approach. Before Snyder got his hands on the script, the film wasn’t even R-rated. He also removed many iconic scenes from the graphic novel in favor of a more modern version.

“The scenario for which I was received first watchmenthe studio was like, ‘It’s gonna be PG-13, it’s gonna be updated [from 1985 and the Cold War] to the War on Terror, Dr. Manhattan goes to Iraq instead of Vietnam, no Manhattan on Mars, no comedian death, no Rorschach interrogation – just a superhero movie. Just a real franchiseable superhero movie,” Snyder recalled to MTV News.

It wasn’t the kind of movie dawn of the dead filmmaker was interested in doing. Especially since he felt that mainstream movies were irresponsible in some ways and he wanted to come up with something unique in the genre.

“What do superheroes mean? Why do we like the characters? It goes all the way to violence, the sexuality of it, going as far as it goes both ways. To say that, you know, we’re used to violence without consequences, it’s okay, nobody gets hurt, everyone gets up, that’s PG-13. I find it really irresponsible,” he said.
