The Department of Letters of the Faculty of Letters & Human Sciences, in collaboration with the Department of History of the University of Namur, is looking for a holder of a full-time (100%) doctoral scholarship in the field of film history


  • You will actively work on the preparation and defense of a doctoral thesis in the field of film history.
  • This is a joint doctorate between the University of Antwerp (main establishment) and the University of Namur (partner establishment in which you are carrying out research for a minimum period of 6 months).
  • You will conduct research as part of the FWO Screening Multiple Identities project. National, sub-national and transnational discourses in post-war Belgian cinema with the supervisors prof. Gertjan Willems (UAntwerpen) and prof. B n dictates Rochet (University of Namur). The project studies the relationship between various cultural identities (notably Belgian, Flemish, Walloon, Brussels, European, colonial, migrant and diasporic) and Belgian films from the period 1944-1960. Your doctoral thesis falls within the outlines of this project.
  • You will publish scientific articles related to the research project.
  • You will perform a limited number of teaching and research support tasks.


  • You hold a Master’s degree in Film Studies or related study programs (History, Literature, Media and Communication Studies, Art History…) or you have obtained the degree at the time you start to work.
  • You can demonstrate excellent study results.
  • Your teaching skills match those of the University of Antwerp pedagogical vision.
  • Your research qualities are in line with the faculty and university research policies.
  • You act with concern for quality, integrity, creativity and cooperation.
  • You have a thorough knowledge of Dutch, English and French, or you want to improve your language skills.
  • You have a strong interest in the history of Belgian cinema, film analysis and archival research.

What we offer

  • We offer a doctoral scholarship for a period of 4 years.
  • The expected start date is between June 1, 2022 and December 31, 2022.
  • The monthly amount of your scholarship is calculated according to the scholarship amounts for holders of a doctoral scholarship on the scales of contractual research agents (Dutch: Bijzonder Academisch PersoneelBAP).
  • You will receive ecocheques, an internet connection allowance and a bicycle allowance or full reimbursement of public transport costs for your commuting.
  • You will do most of your work at City Campus in a dynamic and stimulating work environment.
