Ram Setu Controversy: Ever since the then Congress-led UPA government filed an affidavit in the Supreme Court claiming that the Valmiki Ramayana, which quotes Ram Setu erected by Lord Rama, lacks scientific and historical authenticity, the controversy surrounding Ram Setu has resurfaced. Discovery Science Channel’s new show, Ram Setu, has a teaser that suggests she’s artificial and unnatural.
According to an archaeologist quoted by the network, the rocks resting on the sand predate the sand itself. The BJP has seized on the claim made by the station and is asking Congress to apologize.
Whoever filed the affidavit should provide an explanation now. What the BJP has always maintained is now backed by evidence… Today, BJP Leader Ravi Shankar Prasad and Union Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad claimed that Setu is part of our cultural heritage.
Controversy
The Sethusamudram ship canal project off Rameshwaram in Tamilnadu is the source of the Ram Setu controversy. To connect the Arabian Sea to the Bay of Bengal, the plan called for the construction of a shipping channel through the Gulf of Mannar, Palk Bay and Palk Strait.
Adam’s Bridge (also known as the Bridge of Rama, Ram Setu and Ramar Palam) was to be dredged in the Sethusamudram Sea between Tamil Nadu and Sri Lanka to create a route across the limestone benches of the Adam’s bridge. Many political parties have included the idea in their election manifestos over the years.
The Sethu Samudram Project Committee, chaired by Dr. A Ramaswamy Mudaliar, was established by the Indian government in 1955 to assess the feasibility of the project. The committee had concluded that the idea was viable at this stage. Although he advised against cutting the waterway through the Ram Setu, it was nevertheless recommended.
The then NDA administration announced in 1999 that the Sethusamudram project would be completed. The Sethusamudram project had also been funded by the NDA government in the 2000-01 budget, and the 2004 NDA manifesto promised rapid completion. The project was established in 2005 by the UPA government led by Manmohan Singh.
Environmentalists, Hindu groups and nationalist parties like the BJP have all opposed the plan. In order to avoid cutting through the Ram Setu, the Center created in 2008 a committee headed by RK Pachauri, composed of six members. When the committee reviewed the project in 2013, it concluded that it was ecologically and economically unfeasible.

political storm
The Sethusamudram project has been petitioned to the Supreme Court. According to the petition, the ‘Ram Setu’ is a historical and cultural artifact based on Valmiki Ramayana and Tulsi Das’ Ramcharitmanas. As a result, the Center filed an affidavit, setting up a big debate just days before elections for state legislatures across the country.
While Valmiki and the Ramayana and Ramcharitmanas are famous works of ancient Indian literature, they cannot be considered historical documents that prove beyond reasonable doubt the existence of the characters and events depicted therein. This was stated in a government affidavit.
“Ram Setu” was not a man-made structure, as the Center asserted in its affidavit, citing investigations that showed it was formed of a “linear pattern with a reef ridge, sand cases and intermittent deep channels” of small reefs. The BJP called the government’s claim heresy.

Part of the government’s argument was that suspending the project because it might damage Ram Setu or Adam’s Bridge was a violation of government rights. Opposition pressure led the government to withdraw the affidavit and suspend two ASI employees, who were held responsible for the mess.
“Lord Rama is an intrinsic part of Indian culture and ethics and cannot be debated or disputed in court,” said HR Bharadwaj, then India’s justice minister. ‘Union. It is as if the Himalayas were the Himalayas and the Ganges were the Ganges. It comes down to a matter of belief. Proof of existence based on faith requires no proof at all.

Reactions to the Center Affidavit
Different political parties have interpreted the Center’s decision in different ways. The CPM reported that the UPA government had “calculated surrender to Saffron Agenda” as the title of an article. A BJP statement said, “The BJP’s clandestine reversal of its opposition to the Indo-US nuclear deal exposed its own surrender on the issue of safeguarding the nation’s sovereignty.”
The surrender prompted the Bharatiya Janata Party to stir up a frenzy around the so-called “Ram Setu” bridge, which it says is a symbol of “nationalism”. As the Sangh Parivar engaged in violent campaigns in Tamil Nadu, burning two people alive on a bus, planting a bomb on Karunanidhi’s daughter’s house, and issuing fatwas calling for Karunanidhi’s death, the UPA government instead succumbed to the BJP and gave it credibility. ”

Along with this criticism of the Congress and its “very dirty tactic of playing with the faith of the people and then for the purpose of voting”, India’s ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) also criticized it. “He has compromised his anti-Ram attitude, which will cost him dearly.
It stung and hurt the faith. He has ruined the faith of millions of Indians both at home and abroad who value Ram above all else. The BJP said the Congress Party’s attempts at “damage management” or “patching” were “simply laughable”.
When the UPA government testified in the Supreme Court that Lord Ram did not exist and that the Ramayana had no historical basis, top BJP leader LK Advani lambasted the federal government. “It is obvious that the pseudo-secularism of the Congress party has degraded into sadistic secularism,” he said.
‘Ram Setu’ is directed by Abhishek Sharma and it stars Akshay Kumar, Jacqueline Fernandez, Nushratt Bharucha and Satya Dev in the lead roles. The film follows an archaeologist who sets out to research whether Ram Setu is real or a myth.
