An audio interview with author Douglas Wolk, who has read every published Marvel comic in the past 60 years
Journalist and critic Douglas Wolk spent his pandemic immersed in the world of Marvel. And we don’t just mean he watched all three “Iron Man” movies. Wolk has read just about every issue of every comic that Marvel has published since 1961. The result is “All the Wonders,” the most comprehensive critical appraisal imaginable of what Wolk calls “the greatest story ever told.” . Wolk doesn’t tell the Marvel story except in a brief appendix. But it traces the universe of Marvel comics through various threads, from more well-known storylines like Spider-Man and the X-Men, to fan-only books like “Masters of Kung Fu” and “Dazzler”. There is also an extensive appreciation of Jack Kirby’s work, the artistic genius behind Marvel’s golden age.
I interviewed Wolk just as Wolk was about to go on a book tour to promote “All of the Marvels”. You’ve never heard two more silly comic book idiots having comic book fun. Or maybe you have. You will learn a lot, and you will learn even more if you read Wolk’s book. Excelsior!
